ESSENTIAL PACKING TIPS

Make sure to purchase good quality packing materials. It is recommended to purchase different sizes of boxes. You may consult our moving consultants for packing recommendations.

Must have packing supplies:

  • Moving Boxes /Plastic Bins (different sizes)

  • Bubble Wrap

  • Packing Paper

  • Tape and Scissors

  • Label Stickers and Marking Pens

Keep this “moving file” in a safe place where you will not accidentally pack it in a box. Include in it important paperwork you will need throughout your move such as:

  • Moving truck reservation

  • Move estimate

  • Cash for movers tips

  • Hotel reservation (if applicable)

  • Contact information for important people (realtor or property owner)

  • Any important documents you could need before you have the chance to unpack.

Make sure you have enough space when packing. This provides you with an overview of the items to be packed first and items to be packed last.

  • Wrap each individual item properly with enough layers of packing paper or bubble wrap, if necessary

  • Place items inside a box carefully in the correct position to avoid any damage.

  • Heavier items should be placed on the bottom while lighter items should be placed on the top inside the box

  • Pack heavy items in a smaller box

  • Don’t over pack boxes until they are bulky because they break

  • Pack fragile or breakable items with extra care and attention

  • If required, use more layers of packing paper or bubble wrap to wrap such items

  • Use compressed packing paper to fill the empty space in the box or plastic bins

  • After packing the box don’t forget to label each box this will be very helpful when you unpack

Keep and pack items that you use and dispose or donate what you think are junk.

  • You may use your kitchen food storage containers for loose items as you empty drawers from the kitchen, desks, or table drawers. Do not forget to look inside the dishwasher.

  • Make sure to label each box according to their contents and the rooms they belong to and then securely close or tape them.

  • You may use various tote/plastic bags for the same purpose (baking stuff, condiments etc.), then you may place them inside a larger box labeled appropriately with room and content.

Pack one room at a time, pack smaller items first to get them out of the way.  Placing a label on each box will make your unpacking easier once you get where you are going. On the label you can write the room where it will be unpacked and a brief description of the items inside the box. Trust us,  this will make unpacking much easier.

Large items like furniture need a lot of time to disassemble . Make a plan and schedule it on your calendar. During furniture disassembly keep small loose items such as screws, nuts etc in a double-thick Ziploc bag then label it appropriately with furniture type, room and content.

You may also ask our professional help, we provide disassembly and reassembly of furniture for a hassle free move.

Have a box with essential items and label it as “Open First”. Items in this box are the essentials that you have been using until the date of the move.

These are small handy items you might want access to before you unpack all boxes:

  • Dishwashing items (soap, sponge, paper towels etc.)

  • Dining utensils (plastic/paper plates/forks, a bottle opener, a pot, a pan, etc.)

  • A couple pens, scissors, an extra box cutter

  • First aid kit

  • Sugary treat or a snack (in case anyone gets hungry or low blood sugar on move-in day)

Making your box of hardware and tools handy will make re-assembling of furniture much easier. Place in it the essentials like allen wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, boxes of nails and nuts. These are the things you will need immediately after moving in for furniture reassembly.

Keep bags in a safe place where they will not be mixed in with everything else. Bring them with you in the car during your move-in day.

Items inside the bag may include:

  • Toiletries (bathing soap, shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste, towel)

  • Complete set of changes of clothes

  • Anything else you know each person will need during the first few days (while everything else is in boxes)

Try to keep them stacked in the rooms that you have finished packing. Double check if all boxes are well labelled before closing them. A day or two before moving day, place the boxes in a room or area in your house where it can be easily moved out.

Do a last minute check of each room before the moving truck leaves,  remember that it is your move and you are the only one who knows which items are to be loaded on the truck and which items are to be left behind. During move day you are the boss, and the movers will follow your every instruction.

Common Moving Mistakes to Avoid to Ensure a Successful Move

Proper planning, preparation and professional consultation prevents poor moves. Here are some common mistakes that you want to avoid to ensure a successful move.

Not getting a Move Estimate

Always get a copy of your move estimate. Move estimate should clearly state the cost for your move as well as all the services included for that price. There are movers who charge by hour, others charge by load/weight. Check which better suits your move or talk to a moving consultant and let them walk you through the move process.

Not providing the Movers your Complete Inventory

For a moving company to give you an accurate and honest quote they will need the complete inventory of items that you will be moving along with additional services you may need (Assembly, Disassembly etc). You can discuss your inventory over the phone, send email with attached photos and description or talk to a moving consultant via video call. Providing movers your complete inventory will give them a better picture of your move and will be a great help for them to plan and provide an accurate and honest quote.

Choosing the Cheapest Mover

The price of a service is different from the price for a product. It is easy to compare product prices at different stores but when it comes to price for a service like movers, it is not apples to apples. The level of professionalism and training varies across different levels of companies which is one of the most important things to remember when comparing the price for services. Choosing the least expensive mover could end up costing you much more than

Not asking about the Charges on your Move Estimate

Some moving companies will not tell you about certain charges unless you ask. You should ask if your estimate includes fuel, travel time, insurance, stairs and/or elevators and packing of your boxes if needed. All these items should be included in your move estimate. You can talk to a moving consultant to discuss your move estimate and walk you through the move process.

Packing Everything at the Last Minute

Packing a day or two before your move is the worst thing you can do. Packing is very time consuming and also needs to be organized as there is only so much room in the truck to fit all your things. Disorganized packing will make unpacking much more of a chore than necessary. Plan ahead, schedule which room to go first, delegate tasks and make a checklist. If it is your first time to move, always check out move tips and tricks or better to consult a moving consultant to get a picture of your move.
